Visiting Research Associate, Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan

¤¤¥¡¬ã¨s°|¥Á±Ú¾Ç¬ã¨s©Ò³X°Ý¾ÇªÌ

Introduction

Allison Goodwin has lived in Taiwan since 2002, where she has been a Visiting Research Associate at The Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, thanks to financial support provided by fellowships from the Blakemore Freeman Foundation, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office.

During her time at Academia Sinica, she has conducted research on Buddhist theories of female inferiority; and on how humans use language to transform the self--focusing in particular on how the women of South Hunan, China used nüshu, a written language used only by women, both to imprison and transform themselves; and on how Buddhists use mantras, prayer, scripture, and spoken language to transform the self and to move beyond language and self entirely.

She has studied Chinese at National Taiwan University, and read English Literature at Clare College, Cambridge University, and has a B.A. in English Literature from Barnard College, Columbia University in New York (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude), and an M.F.A. from Syracuse University, N.Y., where she graduated Phi Kappa Phi in Creative Writing, Fiction.

She has received numerous awards and fellowships for her short fiction and screenplays, and has recently completed a screenplay and novel, Red Flowers, based on her research on the lives of the women who write nüshu.

She has also worked for many years in the independent film industry as a freelance script analyst, editor, and reader; as assistant to a film director; and as an Assistant Agent in Motion Pictures/Literary at the William Morris Agency.

Introduction

Bhante Sujato (Anthony Best) a Perth born, Western Australia monk. He went to Thailand in 1992. In the tradition of Ajahn Chah, he asked for and was granted novice ordination, and in the following year took full ordination as a bhikkhu on 5/5/1994.

He spent three vassa studying under Ajahn Brahm at Bodhinayana Monastery, and several years in remote hermitages and caves in Thailand and Malaysia.

In recent years Bhante Sujato has taught Dharma and meditation to a varied audience in his local area and internationally, and has spoken at several major international Buddhist conferences and events. His writings explore the earliest Buddhist scriptures, using a comparative and historical approach to illuminate the process of formation of Buddhist ideology and identity; books include ¡§A Swift Pair of Messengers¡¨, ¡§A History of Mindfulness¡¨, ¡§Beginnings¡¨, and ¡§Sects & Sectarianism¡¨.

A special field of interest is the role of women in Buddhism, and particularly in the revival of the bhikkhuni order within the Theravada tradition. Bhante Sujato brings his text-critical faculties to bear on this urgent modern dilemma, in addition to his work in actually establishing a bhikkhuni community at Santi.

Franciscan Spirituality (Internship Programme) Cincinnati, Ohio

CURRENT POSITIONS:

Cecilia Yeh, a native of Taiwan is a first generation Christian and has been a religious sister in the Catholic congregation of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) for twenty five years.  Cecilia has experience in parish ministry both in Taiwan and as a missionary in South Africa for four years.  After a period of further study and training in the USA and Taiwan her primary ministry is that of Spiritual Director which involves directing both individual and group retreats as well as teaching spirituality.

During theological training in addition to interest in spiritual formation her keen and inquisitive mind was first awakened to the concepts of gender and justice issues, feminist theology and ecological concerns.  Cecilia¡¦s faith, beliefs and theology were further challenged during her ministry in the context of South African apartheid system which was at a critical stage.  Later on when studying in the USA Cecilia was privileged to attend classes by Prof. Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza which fueled her enthusiasm to study deeper women in the gospels, feminist theology in general and how feminist spirituality relates to the Taiwanese culture.

Cecilia Yeh is an active member of the Taiwan Sprout Catholic Women Concerns Group (an action-reflection group - Feminist Theological Praxis) and Executive Board Member; she is also one of the founding members and as former chairperson of Sprout.

Outside of the retreat centre, Cecilia is in regular demand as a speaker, to direct retreats and lead workshop in local parishes, diocese and churches (both Catholic and protestant).  Currently Yeh Pao-Kuei teaches part time at the Taiwan Theological College and Seminary, Taipei.

The past several years she has written articles in various magazines in Taiwan and contributed a series of articles to Witness (Catholic Magazine published monthly in Chinese) and more recently co-authored articles for Witness with Ms Carys Humphreys.  On the occasion of her 25th anniversary as a religious in 2006 Yeh Pao-Kuei published her first book in Chinese under the title: from Chaos to Calm. This volume comprises a collection of her papers and articles amongst which she shares candidly about her own spiritual journey as a Taiwanese woman and religious.

Research areas of interest: gender education, action research, and critical literacies.

This paper attempts to share my stories as the first woman to preside over the annual ancestral ceremonies of Dou-sun Family Temple, a historical site where the Hsiao¡¦s ancestors have long been resided more than a century. Because of this very A-traditional cultural performance, the ancestral worship culture of male dominance has been re-written , not just for the Hsiao¡¦s family, but also for the patriarchal ancestral ceremonies in the Han people. What have happened in the process? How have the Dou-sun Family Temple committee and the local people reacted to this a-traditional event? How can gender equity become a reality in the daily lives of people¡¦s worship and religious culture? These are the questions that I will examine in this paper.

In September 1997, she also started teaching Religious Studies in the Faculty of Social and Humanity at Hsuan Chuang University, where she is currently a Professor of Religious Studies.

In June 2004, the Venerable founded the Research Centre for Applied Ethics (of which she is also currently the director). She is also the Dean of the Graduate Department of Hong Shih Buddhist College.

The Venerable has led a number of nation-wide social movements. Among them, the "Kuan Yin Statue Incident" in March 1994 and the urge for "Vesak Day as a Public Holiday" in 1999 were two incidents highly praised by both local and overseas Buddhists.

She was the founder of the Life Conservationist Association of the Republic of China, and served as its President from 1993 to 1999. The Venerable urged for both the legislation of animal welfare, and to stop the abuse and cruel treatment of animals. These highlighted the Buddhist aspiration of protecting lives. During her term in office, she gathered much support, and successfully pushed through the motions of the "Law of Caring for Wildlife Animals" and the "Law of Protecting Animals" to be adopted by the legislative department. This has garnered much praise from the public.

Besides her appointments, the Venerable also writes many articles on environmental conservation, ecological protection, human rights protection, and issues concerning religion and politics. The Venerable voices her opinion from the Buddhist point of view, and publishes these articles in several major newspapers. Occasionally, she may be involved in some public activities, playing a leading role amongst the Buddhist communities in leading or participating in social movements.

In March 1999, the Head of Nan Tou Province, Mr. Peng Bai Xian invited Venerable Chao Hwei to be the Assistant Head of the Province. Taking into consideration the principle of maintaining a clear distinction between religion and politics, the Venerable declined the invitation.

On the 30th of March 2001, she formally urged Venerable Dalai Lama, who was visiting Taiwan the next day, to put extra effort into reviving the Tibetan nun's order. On the 31st of March, during the opening ceremony of the scholastic seminar on the "Prolongation and Propagation of Buddhism for the Human World", which was also the celebration of Venerable Yin Shun's ninety-sixth birthday, the Venerable officially declared the "Abolishment of the Eight Principles for Nuns". Eight people representing the four categories of Buddha's disciples were invited to the stage to tear down the eight clauses. This was to acknowledge that the Buddha had not originally set these Eight Principles. Anyone who wishes to follow and uphold the Buddha's teaching of equality should avoid abiding by these principles, as they strongly discriminate against females.

From July to August 2003, the Venerable authored three articles opposing the cruel killing of animals in the name of traditional culture or religion, such as the sacrificing of animals to gods and ancestors, and other dated rituals. Although the articles were met with strong opposition, they brought the issue into a public spotlight.

Near the end of 2004, the Venerable called a press conference and wrote several articles strongly criticizing Nan Tou county for opening the Dan Da forest for public hunting use. Once again, the articles were met with heavy opposition, this time from aboriginal organizations. However, her actions contributed to the eventual policy adjustment that restricted hunting in that forest.

On the 4th of May 2007, the Venerable was awarded the 48th Chinese Literature and Arts Medal for her outstanding performance in cultural discussion.

As of June 2006, the Venerable has written and published twenty-five books and over forty research papers. The books include: Thus Have I Thought, The Buddhist Ethics, The Compassionate Kuan Yin, The Planter of Buddhism for Human World - Venerable Yin Shun, To Confront the Tall Tower and Hit the Bell with No Fear, The Testing Field of Buddhism for the Human World, A Contemporary Interpretation of the Buddha's Regulations (Vinaya), Early Thoughts of the Study of Consciousness-only, Thousand Years' Intonation, The Normative Ethics of Buddhism, and The Historical Footsteps of the Practice of the Bodhisattva Path in the Human Form.

Introduction

Fai-Yan, a given Buddhist name, was born in Fengshan, Taiwan¡Xa thriving city located a few miles away from Kaohsiung.  She has become a successful example of a person rising from poverty to prosperity.  She enjoys sharing her life experiences, career, and visions with people who seek a continuously improving life.

She came from a poor family with two younger brothers and a younger sister.      Fai-Yan earned a doctorate degree of liberal art in 1990 from the popular Kyoto Buddhism University in Japan, becoming the first Buddhist nun who ever became a doctor in such a special research institute.  She joined Chung-Shin University after returning to Taiwan.  In 1991, she became the head of the Buddhist Temple of Fengshan.  She taught in many famous universities such as Chung-Yhan, Chung-Fa, and Yan-Shan.  She is currently teaching in the Chin-Fa University and Hsuan Chuang University. She is also the author of many books, such as Buddhism Study of Fai-Yan, Buddhism in Taiwan, Chin-Tou Theory, View from the Earth to Chin-Tou, and Taiwan Buddhism Study
